Biopsy by physical (excisional) removal of tissue sample has been the normal diagnostic method for a very long time. It has been and continues to be a very reliable technique for diagnosing a wide range of tissue related issues. Main disadvantages of this technique include anaesthesia related complications, pain, bleeding, infection possibility, scaring, damage to other structures, delays to get results, increased costs, possible need for surgical procedure, inadequate or incorrect site of biopsy and difficulty with closing the biopsy site.

According to reports like this and this by scientistsptical biopsy technology has the potential to avoid all of these disadvantages while delivering additional benefits. Current imaging technologies being utilized to implement optical biopsy is physical and some, cumbersome not to mention, expensive. In addition, they require local presence of equipment, patient and equipment operator.
